This Sunday we plan to sing a worship song that reminds us of the life changing nature of God’s Holy Word. We can easily take for granted on Sunday morning when we choose among which of our Bibles to carry to church that this book has come to us on a river of blood. We forget that God’s providential preservation of His Word has cost countless, faithful servants their lives. Well over a hundred years ago the Anglican bishop, JC Ryle, made this observation that is more true today: “There is more Bible buying, Bible selling, Bible printing and Bible distributing than ever before in our nation. We see Bibles in every bookstore; Bibles of every size, price and style. There are Bibles in almost every house in the land. But all this time I fear we are in danger of forgetting that to HAVE the Bible is one thing, and to READ it quite another.” So, heed the words that came to Augustine’s heart long ago, “Take up and Read”. Come to church this Sunday morning and sing that worship song with delight in your soul that you, this very week, have experienced the life transforming power of God’s Word.
