I’d Rather Have Jesus…

I’d Rather Have Jesus…

John Calvin is quoted as saying that our hearts are “idol factories”, in other words, we find ways to continually turn things into idols.  An idol is essentially a created thing that we make an ultimate thing.  For some, sports is one of these things.  Most of us probably know that “guy” or maybe that “girl” for whom sports is the end all be all.  Millions of dollars are spent in advertising every year to encourage this level of idolatry.  Make no mistake, I don’t think sports are bad, I really enjoy sports and there’s nothing wrong with that.  But it seems that in some ways, sports has become more of an ultimate thing of late. Sports are wonderful and enjoyable and can be used to the glory of God, but they are not ultimate, sports are not everything.  But there is something that is: Jesus Christ.  We can make almost anything an idol, and it’s very refreshing to hear professional athletes at the top of their field, acknowledge that they’d rather have Jesus. That’s exactly why I wanted to share this clip that I saw the other night. In this clip Mark Driscoll, who is a pastor in the Seattle area, interviews a few members of the Seattle Seahawks players and coaching staff.  At the time of this interview they we’re one more playoff game away from making it to the Superbowl, the NFL Championship Game.  They have since won that game this last weekend, and will play for the Championship (Superbowl) on February 2nd against the Denver Broncos. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
